Tigers Earn DH Sweep over Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The West Alabama Softball team collected a pair of gritty one-run wins Sunday afternoon and earned a doubleheader sweep over the Delta State Lady Statesmen at University Field in Gulf South Conference action.
 
The Tigers improved to 24-17 overall and 13-9 in the GSC. DSU fell to 21-20 on the season and 11-15 in the conference.
 
West Alabama struck first with an RBI single in the top of the third from Kacy Noland to score Kailey Hunt to put the Tigers up 1-0.
 
Delta State responded with an RBI single from Abi Gibson to tie the contest 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
 
Hayes Fulford used a pinch-hit RBI in the sixth to bring in Kendall Johnson from third to give UWA the 2-1 winning margin in game one.
 
Alli Craft received an RBI walk in the first in game two as Jenna Goldsmith. Hunt came up and did the as she drew an RBI walk to bring in Grace Self
 
Craft came back in the third and hit a ball hard to center that was only kept in because of the wind that wound up a double to bring in Kierra Hague. Johnson got a hit to left field for an RBI to score Craft and during the play Olivia Dunlap was able to score as Johnson stole second to put UWA up 5-0.
 
Jordan Jones got the Lady Statesmen on the board with a hit through the left side to bring in Gibson. 
 
Jones then hit her sixth home run of the year for a two-run shot to cut the Tiger lead to 5-3.
 
In the seventh, Mallory Myers hit a triple to right field to allow Taylor Pichu to score and move the score to 5-4 which held as the final score. 
 
Nora Keehn earned a win in game one to move her pitching record to 12-7 and her first save of the season in game two. Keehn pitched eight total innings on the day with six strikeouts. She allowed eight hits and two earned runs. Carleigh Mills (5-2) pitched three innings in game two with a strikeout while allowing three hits and no earned runs. Kamree Lay pitched three innings of relief in the second game and notched two strikeouts with two hits and two earned runs allowed.
