Tigers Split GSC Doubleheader with Choctaws

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers grabbed a third win this season of a team ranked in the first NCAA Division II South Regional rankings and split a Gulf South Conference Doubleheader with the Mississippi College Choctaws Saturday at the UWA Softball Complex. The Tigers won the first game 3-1 before dropping the second contest 9-2.
 
West Alabama moves to 26-18 on the season and 15-10 in conference play. MC leaves Livingston with a 34-11 record and 17-7 mark in league play.
 
Kierra Hague scored the first run of the day with a solo homer over left field in the bottom of the third to give UWA a 1-0 lead.
 
Then in the bottom of the fifth, Alli Craft laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought in Kacy Noland. Grace Self came up and laid down another sacrifice bunt to bring UWA to a 3-0 lead.
 
Mississippi College got on the board in the seventh with a blooper single by Kristen Qualls to bring in Annemarie Peavy to reach the 3-1 final score.
 
West Alabama scored the first run of game two as well as Nicole Buccieri got hit passed the shortstop while Shay Shepherd scored all the way from second base. 
 
Self got her second RBI of the day in the third on ball hit sharply through the left side which allowed Craft to score from second to put UWA up 2-0.
 
In the fourth, Brianna Caldwell hit a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 2-1.
 
Abbey Salvo tied the game at 2-2 with an infield RBI to let Ashley Elsensohn score from third base.
 
The Choctaws took their first lead of the day in the sixth when Carly Crawford hit doubled to the left field wall to bring in Alexia Harmon all the way from first. Qualls hit a two RBI single to center, Gracie Trahan had an RBI single to shallow center field, Morgan Bradford scored on a wild pitch, Trahan then scored on an error and Peavy scored on another error to put MC up 9-2 which held as the final score.
 
Nora Keehn (14-7) went the distance in game one with a career high 11 strikeouts while allowing seven hits and an earned run. 
 
Carleigh Mills (5-3) went five innings in game two with five strikeouts but also five hits and three earned runs. Kamree Lay surrendered a hit and two earned runs and Keehn gave up two hits and two earned runs in a relief appearance. Kat Burks pitched an inning with a hit and a walk while Kacy Noland finished the second game with only a hit surrendered. 
 
West Alabama returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Miles College. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
