Tigers Sweep DSU, Clinch GSC Tournament Berth

CLEVELAND, Miss.– The West Alabama Softball team brought broke a bunch of streaks to today as the Tigers defeated the Delta State Lady Statesmen 10-6 to sweep the Gulf South Conference series Monday afternoon at University Field to clinch a spot in the GSC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2014.

Today's win also marked the first sweep of a GSC series outside of Christian Brothers since 2014 when the Tigers swept Union. First season sweep of Delta State since the Tigers switched conference series formats. UWA took all for games of the old-style home and away doubleheaders in 2013.

The Tigers are now 25-17 on the season and 14-9 in the GSC. DSU falls to 21-21 overall and 11-16 in league play.

West Alabama was on the board first an error by the second baseman that allowed Kendall Johnson to reach second as Chrissy Tubbs and Hayes Fulford scored. Johnson scored on a wild pitch. Kierra Hague cleared the bases with a homer over left field to give UWA a 6-0 lead in the second inning.

Then in the fourth, Hague smashed an RBI single up the middle that allowed Jenna Goldsmith to score from second to put UWA up 7-0.

Mari Alex Sandridge got DSU on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to bring in Jordan Jones to cut the lead to 7-1.

An error off the bat of Sandridge let Abi Gibson to score from second to make it 7-2 in favor of the Tigers after six innings.

Grace Self grabbed an RBI single in the seventh inning to bring in a pinch-running Shay Shepherd. Tubbs later scored on a passed ball. Kailey Hunt scored on a sacrifice fly from Kylie Martin to push the lead to 10-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mallory Myers singled in Taylor Picou, which was followed by a two-RBI double by Gibson. Jones doubled to right to bring in Gibson to reach the 10-6 final score.

Carleigh Mills pitched an inning in relief with four hits and four earned runs while Kamree Lay finished the game with only a hit allowed in the seventh inning.
