Tigers Take Two from Miles to Wrap Home Slate

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers hosted the Miles College Lady Bears in non-conference softball action Tuesday afternoon to close out the home schedule at the UWA Softball Complex for the 2019 season and UWA did it in grand fashion with a doubleheader sweep. The Tigers won game one 4-2 and the second game 11-0 in five innings.
 
West Alabama, winner of eight of the the last nine games, improves to 28-18 on the season. Miles College falls to 7-34.
 
The Lady Bears scored early in the first inning when leadoff hitter Davis Watkins scored on an error to go up 1-0.
 
UWA scored its first runs in the bottom of the second when Chrissy Tubbs reached on an error off her bunt attempt that allowed Nicole Buccieri to score. Tubbs later scored on a passed ball to put UWA up 2-1.
 
In the bottom of the third, Buccieri doubled to left field allowing Jenna Goldsmith to score and extend the lead to 3-1.
 
The Tigers added another run in the fifth with a double by Kendall Johnson to left field to bring in Haylie Best to put UWA up 4-1.
 
Miles added a run in the sixth with an RBI single by Yasmin Cottingham to bring the score to the final 4-2 margin.
 
Game two was all UWA and the Tigers started the scoring in the bottom of the first when Grace Self hit a single to left center to bring in Kierra Hague
 
Then in the bottom of the second, Johnson hit a two-RBI single to left field that allowed Mckinley Parris and Best. Kacy Noland followed that with a bunt single to bring in Johnson to put UWA up 4-0.
 
The Tigers offense exploded in the fourth starting with an RBI single to left center by Noland to bring in Johnson, Hague singled in Noland, Goldsmith grabbed a two-RBI double to bring in Kendall Hannah and Hague, Chelsea Lobitos reached on a fielder's choice which was good for two RBIs as Lee Lee Parker and Self scored and finally Hayes Fulford got an RBI single up the middle to bring in Olivia Dunlap to cap the seven run inning and give UWA the 11-0 final score.
 
Nora Keehn (15-7) pitched five innings to earn the win in game one with five strikeouts and no earned runs. Kat Burks pitched an inning of relief with a hit and earned run allowed. Carleigh Mills earned her second save of the season by sitting down the final three batters in order.
 
Kacy Noland (4-3) earned the game two win with two strikeouts in four innings of work and only a hit allowed to the lead-off batter. Mills pitched the final inning and struck out two batters.
 
West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference competition this weekend with a series against the West Florida Lady Argos. First pitch of the series is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at the UWF Softball Complex in Pensacola, Florida.
