Tigers Capture Top Seed in GSC Women’s Championship Tournament

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 12th-ranked West Alabama women's tennis team nailed down the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2019 Gulf South Conference Tennis Championship by defeating Alabama Huntsville, 6-1, Sunday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.

The Tigers extended their winning streak to 12 matches, improving to 15-4 overall and a perfect 10-0 in league play. UAH dropped to 10-10 and 5-6.

West Florida is in second place in the GSC standings at 10-1, but even if West Alabama loses Tuesday at West Georgia, the Tigers would own the tiebreaker over UWF by virtue of a 4-3 victory over the Argos on March 2. The GSC Tournament begins May 2 in Montgomery, Alabama.

A win at UWG Tuesday would make the Tigers the outright GSC regular season champions in addition to the No. 1 seed in the tournament. West Alabama has never won a GSC title in women's tennis and is on the verge of the program's first trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

West Alabama hasn't lost a match since falling, 6-1, to No. 7 Nova Southeastern on March 9. Since starting the season 1-3, the Tigers have rattled off 14 wins in the last 15 matches.

"It was another good day for the women," an understated UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "We need to keep playing hard and working toward our goals."

After taking the doubles point with three wins, West Alabama won five of six singles courts to cruise to the victory. Sarah Manseri's 6-2, 7-6 win over Sarah Stearman at No. 2 singles clinched the match for the Tigers.

Other singles winners for UWA were Haina Franco, Georgina Salom, Andrea Tomassone and Liliana Araucz.

Salom and Tomassone won at No. 1 doubles, Maseri and Araucz at No. 2 and Daryna Hukasian and Franco at No. 3.
