Tigers Close Regular Season with Win at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The West Alabama men's tennis team closed the 2019 regular season in fine fashion by defeating Alabama Huntsville, 6-1, Wednesday at the UAH Tennis Complex.
 
The 15th-ranked Tigers will compete next in the GSC Championship Tournament as the No. 3 seed at 15-5 overall and 7-3 in GSC play. UAH will be the No. 8 seed in the field with an 8-10 record, 2-8 in league play. The tourney begins May 2 in Montgomery.
 
"After a bit of a shaky start, it turned into a good day. We stepped it up in singles and did what was needed," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "UAH is a deep team that has a ton of 4-to-3 losses against strong competition."
 
UAH won at No. 1 doubles before Henrik Sinkko and Ilari Vesanen at No. 2, as well as Noah Johansen and Ilia Dehodiuk at No. 3, posted victories to claim the come from behind doubles point for UWA.
 
The Tigers won five of six singles courts to take home the victory. Linus Holthey posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tim Nutz at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for West Alabama.
 
West Alabama's opponent in the first round of the GSC Tournament is yet to be determined. The Tigers will play the No. 6 seed, which will be either Delta State or Montevallo. The Statesmen and Falcons play Saturday.
