Argos Eliminate UWA Men From GSC Tennis Tourney

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – IN a battle of top 18 teams in the nation West Florida eliminated West Alabama from the 2019 Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Championships by a 4-1 margin Friday at Lagoon Park.
 
Ranked seventh in the nation and third regionally, the Argos (20-5) move on to face top-seeded Valdosta State in the finals Saturday at 10 a.m. UWF has won eight consecutive matches.
 
West Alabama (16-6), ranked 18th in the nation and fifth in the South Region, awaits the decision of the South Region committee on Tuesday in regard to a NCAA bid.
 
"It was a great battle that was a lot closer than the score indicates" UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "I am very proud of the way our guys competed. Now we just wait and see if we get a bid to the regional."
 
After winning the doubles points with victories on the No. 1 and 3 courts, the Argonauts won at No. 1, 2 and 3 in singles to win the match. West Alabama's lone victory came at No. 6 singles where Erik Nordblom defeated Pedro Cordeiro 7-5, 6-2.
 
The NCAA South Region Tournament is May 11-14 at a site to be determined.
