Argos Sweep UWA to End Tiger Season

PENSCACOLA, Fla. – West Florida used a walkoff hit and then came from three runs behind to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from West Alabama Saturday at Jim Spooner Field. UWF won the first game, 6-5, and the second, 10-5.

West Florida ended its regular season 33-14 overall and 22-7 in GSC play. The No. 6 Argos will play in the GSC Championship Tournament beginning May 3 in Oxford, Alabama. West Alabama ended its season 22-22 and 9-18.

Adam Imwalle's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth scored Matt Sullivan to give UWF the win in game one. Imwalle's walk off hit came after UWA's JD Roberts had doubled in Chris Simon to tie the game at 5-5 in the eighth.

In game two West Alabama scored four runs on five hits to take a 5-2 lead over West Florida the top of the fourth inning, but the Argos answered with five runs of their own on five hits and two walks in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not relinquish.

UWF pushed across three more runs in the sixth inning on two hits and two walks to put the game and the series away. UWF swept the three-game set after winning, 7-4, on Friday night.

Jared Middleton (2-2) was the game one winner in relief and Argo starter Andrew Vaccacio (6-1) struck out 10 to pick up the win in game two. UWA reliever Kirby Osborn (1-1) took the loss in game one, while reliever Tanner Elders (3-7) faced two batters and took the loss in the second game.

Sullivan and Imwalle both had three hits for the Argonauts in game one, five in the two games. Matthew Estrada and Robert Lopez chipped in two hits each in game two.

Tiger senior Chris Simon collected three hits in game one and added another one in game two on his final day in a Tiger uniform. Taylor Clemmons  and Ben Dalke had two hits apiece for UWA in game two.
