Tigers Fall in GSC Doubleheader against #2 UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla.– Missed opportunities plagued the West Alabama Softball team all day long as the Tigers came up short in both games of Saturday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader against the #2 West Florida Argonauts at the UWF Softball Complex as UWF won game one 6-5 and the second game 1-0.
 
West Alabama finishes the regular season 28-21 overall and 15-13 in the GSC. The Argos improves to 43-8 and 25-4 in league play.
 
Rhiannon Sassman put the first RBI on the board for the Argos with a ground out that allowed Rachel Wright to score from third. Kathleen Smiley followed with a solo homer to put UWF up 2-0 after the first inning. 
 
Then in the third, Sassman doubled off the right field wall to bring in two more runs. An infield error allowed Sassman to score. Then Smiley hit an RBI double to center to extend the lead to 6-0. 
 
West Alabama got on the board in the top of the 4th with a hard hit by Alli Craft that allowed Chrissy Tubbs to score from second. Kierra Hague came in to score on a passed ball to cut the lead to 6-2. 
 
Tigers had a chance in the fifth and loaded the bases with a hit and a pair of walks but were unable to push a run across. UWA also left two runners on in the sixth as well. The team would end up leaving nine runners on base. West Alabama outhit the Argos nine to eight in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
In the seventh, Jenna Goldsmith got a bases loaded single to right to bring in Hague. Nicole Buccieri hit a sacrifice fly to left field as Ali Craft tagged from third. Haylie Best got a hit to left field to bring in Paige Dill, but a play at the plate ended the Tiger rally as the Argos won 6-5 in game one. 
 
West Florida scored first in game two when Rachel Wright singled to shallow right to bring in Mika Garcia which stood as the only run of the 1-0 battle.
 
Runners left on caught up to the Tigers once more as UWA stranded five runners on base in the second game. UWF left four on as well. The Argos out hit West Alabama 5-4 in the second game.
 
Carleigh Mills (5-4) took the loss in game one with five hits and five earned runs allowed. Kat Burks appeared in relief with two hits and an earned run allowed. Kamree Lay went 3.2 innings in relief with three strikeouts and only a hit allowed.
 
Nora Keehn (15-9) pitched all six defensive innings for the Tigers and amassed five strikeouts while allowing the five hits and the one earned run.
 
UWA will return to Pensacola, Florida Thursday, May 2 for the first round of the GSC Championship Softball Tournament as the #4 Seed and is expected to clash with the winner of final matchup between West Georgia and Valdosta State with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
