Tigers Rally to Force DH Split with #7 UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– Down 8-3 in the fifth inning, the stars aligned for the West Alabama Softball team as the Tigers rallied to earn a 9-8 victory in eight innings in the second game of today's Gulf South Conference doubleheader against the #7 Alabama-Huntsville Chargers and split the day's games Friday evening in the UWA Softball Complex. UAH won the first game 8-3.
 
UWA finishes the day 21-17 overall and 10-9 in the GSC. The Chargers are now 31-10 and 15-5 in the league.
 
Amber Hammonds put the first run on the board with a solo homer to left field to make it 1-0 in the top of the second in favor of Alabama-Huntsville.
 
Hammonds came back and hit a grand slam in the third to put UAH up 5-0.
 
The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Kailey Hunt got a hit to center and Kierra Hague came around to score on a misplay by the centerfielder to cut the lead to 5-1.
 
The Chargers added more runs in the fifth with Jada Hayes scoring on a muffed throw and then a two RBI single from Alaina Hampton put UAH up 8-1. 
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Hague homered to left field which brought in herself and Grace Self to cut the lead to 8-3 which stood as the final score.
 
In the second game, Hayes hit a sacrifice fly to center as Reagan Malone tagged from third to make it 1-0.
 
Kacy Noland came back with a lead off solo shot in the bottom of the first. Hayes Fulford drove in Hague on a ground ball to put UWA 2-1.
 
In the third, Hayes reached on a fielder's choice as Shelby Booker crossed home plate to tie the game. Hampton hit a bases clearing double for three RBIs and gave Alabama-Huntsville a 5-2
 
UAH followed that with another fielder's choice to score Booker again in the fourth to go up 6-2
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Olivia Dunlap doubled to center to bring in Hunt and cut the lead to 6-3.
 
The Chargers added to the lead in the fifth when Booker doubled down the third base line to bring in two runs to push the lead to 8-3.
 
Lee Lee Parker scored on an error in the fifth to makes it 8-4. Haylie Best got a pinch hit single to bring in Craft. Chrissy Tubbs smacked a double to center to bring in Fulford. Dunlap drove in Best to cut the lead to 8-7 after five innings. 
 
In the sixth, Craft smacked a sacrifice fly to center as Hague tagged from third to tie the game at 8-8.
 
Craft then came up with the walk off hit in the eighth inning to bring in Self from second base to deliver the dramatic 9-8 come from behind victory.
 
Nora Keehn (11-7) took the loss in game one. The senior pitched 2.2 innings with eight hits and five earned runs. Kat Burks pitched 1.1 innings in relief with three hits and three earned runs. Carleigh Mills pitched three innings and allowed three hits.
 
Mills (3-2) earned the win in game two after pitching 3.2 innings in relief with a strikeout and two hits allowed. Kamree Lay started and went 2.1 innings with a strikeout as well as five hits and four earned runs. Keehn pitched 1.2 innings in with three hits and an earned run. Burks pitched an out and allowed a hit and two earned runs.
 
West Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville meet with the series on the line tomorrow. First pitch is set for noon in Livingston, Alabama.
