UWA Wins Series From UAH With DH Sweep

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – It took just over 10 hours through a pair of lengthy weather delays, but West Alabama persevered to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from Alabama Huntsville Saturday at Tartt Field. UWA won the opener, 15-9, and the nightcap, 7-1.

The victory was the 11th for West Alabama in its last 12 games, improving the Tigers to 21-12 overall, 9-10 in league play with the series win. UAH dropped to 21-15 and 11-9.

Down 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one, West Alabama exploded for 14 runs on 13 hits in its next three at bats to salt away the win. The Tigers didn't waste time in game two, jumping to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and extending it along the way.

Game two was delayed twice for thunderstorms for a total of three hours and 20 minutes, but the Tigers scored runs after each delay for the final margin.

The two teams combined for 32 hits in the opener, with UWA collecting 18 of those. Ryan Hughes went 4-for-5 in game one and Ben Dalke 3-for-3. Taylor Clemmons had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. Justin Booker, Trevor Smeeton, and RJ Brown chipped in two hits each.

Gavin Rogers (1-0) picked up the pitching win in game one in relief of starter Cole Waites, allowing two runs and five hits over 2.1 innings. UAH reliever Taylor Clemons (0-1) took the loss after being tagged with three unearned runs in one-third of an inning pitched.

UWA starter Peyton Warren pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five for the win in the second game. Charger starter Harper Case (3-2) was charged with the loss after allowing eight hits and five runs (three earned) in just two innings of work.

Clemmons, Rogers and Dalke added two more hits each for UWA in game two. Jake Hartman hit his seventh home run, a solo shot to lead off the third inning.

West Alabama also took advantage of seven Charger errors in the two games. Just 10 of the 22 runs scored by West Alabama were earned.

Palmer Ford and Nolan Ramsey had four hits in the two games for Alabama Huntsville. Landon Ezzell and Will Acuff had three hits apiece in the doubleheader.

West Alabama plays its final non-conference home game Wednesday when Spring Hill comes to Tartt Field for a 3 p.m. first pitch. Alabama Huntsville travels to Tuskegee on Wednesday
