UWA Men Advance to GSC Tennis Semi-Finals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No. 18 West Alabama held off a solid charge by Delta State, defeating in the Statesmen, 4-3, in the first round of the 2019 Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Championships Thursday at O'Connor Tennis Complex.
 
The Tigers are now 16-5. Delta State ends its season with a 10-8 record.
 
UWA got off to a good start, taking the doubles point with wins by Henrik Sinkko and Ilari Vesanen at No. 2, as well as Ilia Dehodiuk and Noah Johansen at No. 3.
 
With the match tied at 3-3, GSC freshman of the year Ilari Vesanen defeated Hugo Stroppiana 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Tigers. Other Tiger winners in singles were Sinkko and Erik Nordblom.
 
"This was a very tough battle that could have easily gone the other way," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "Delta is a very tough team. The men are looking forward to a rematch against West Florida tomorrow."
 
The Tigers face West Florida in the semi-finals Friday at 1:30 p.m. UWF won the regular season meeting, 4-2, on March 2 in Pensacola, Florida.
