Offensive Struggles Doom Tigers in Loss to Argos in GSC Tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla.– The offense for the West Alabama Softball team never seemed to get out the gates while the West Florida Argonauts turned it on midway through the game to come away with a 5-0 victory Friday evening during the second day of the Gulf South Conference Softball Championship Tournament at the UWF Softball Complex.

The Tigers, the #5 seed in the tournament, fall to 29-22 on the season and will have to win out to stave off elimination. The top seeded Argos are now 45-8 and will face the winner of

UWF scored first with a solo shot over left center by Jacquelynne Poling to get the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

Then in the fifth, Teala Howard hit a triple to the left center gap for two RBIs followed by a sacrifice fly to center by Rhiannon Sassman to score Howard to go up 4-0.

Scoring continued for the Argos in the sixth as a sacrifice fly to left by Courtney McLellan to give West Florida a commanding 5-0 lead which held as the final.

Nora Keehn (16-10) started for the Tigers and went 4.1 innings while allowing five hits and four earned runs. Kamree Lay worked 1.1 innings in relief with a hit and a run allowed while Carleigh Mills pitched the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout and hit allowed.

UWF's Kelsey Sweatt (17-2) threw all seven innings with eight strikeouts and only two hits allowed which were both collected by Nicole Buccieri.

Now with a loss in the tournament, the Tigers must win two games Saturday to stay alive in the hunt for the championship crown. UWA will start with a contest against Alabama-Huntsville at 11 a.m. Saturday's slate of games was moved to an earlier time to avoid the threat of incoming inclement weather.
