Tigers Grab Historic Victory with 2-0 Win Over #2 CSU

COLUMBUS, Ga.– The West Alabama Women's Soccer team held off one of the best teams in the country in the #2 Columbus State Cougars to come away with a historic 2-0 road victory Sunday afternoon Walden Soccer Complex for the final day of the 2019 CSU Invitational.

The victory marks the Tigers first win over a ranked opponent in the United Soccer Coaches poll in program history as well as the first win in three tries against CSU (3-1-0).

"Coach Jay Entlich has created a legacy and Columbus State and it is a privilege for us to attend such a well-organized tournament," said UWA Head coach Graeme Orr. "We are delighted with the result today. I have to give credit to the staff for their hard work to turn around from Friday's game and create a game plan that was 100 percent bought into by our players."

West Alabama (2-2-0) had both goals scored by newcomers to the squad as Paige Laidler scored unassisted at the 42:12 mark in the first half and later Sarah Coco scored unassisted beating the goalie in a one on one situation at the 76:33 mark for the final 2-0 edge.

"I am so proud of the girls for their hard work and determination that they displayed today to compete and get a shutout victory over one of the best program's in the country," said Orr. "There is a reason Columbus is 48-1-1 at home, and we will take great confidence from the win today."

Both teams took 12 shots with UWA taking a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.

Anele Komani led in total shots with five, two of which were SOGs. TeMia Pride took three shots with two SOGs.
