Tigers Facing Tough Competition in Newly Formed Texan Invitational

STEPHENVILLE, Texas– After the cancellation of the Bahama House Classic, the University of West Alabama Volleyball team was able to fill the hole left by the loss of the four-game tournament with a new slate of matches in the Texan Invitational Tournament hosted by Tarleton State University.
 
The new games will present a strong challenge for the Tigers as all four opponents are ranked no lower than 19 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll.
 
UWA starts the tournament and the season Thursday against #2 Cal State-San Bernardino at 5 p.m. The Coyotes went 28-3 last season and ended the year with a loss in the NCAA West Regional Final.
 
The first of the Friday contests is against #14 Rockhurst at 9 a.m. who was on the original schedule for this weekend. The Hawks went 32-7 last season and fell in the NCAA Midwest Regional Final. t
 
Then the Tigers will face-off against he host #10 Tarleton State Texans at 7 p.m. Last season, TSU went 32-5 and suffered a loss in the NCAA National Tournament quarterfinals.
 
The tournament continues Saturday against #19 Cal State-Los Angeles at 9 a.m. The Eagles went 22-6 last season and fell in the first round of the NCAA West Regional.
 
West Alabama concludes the invitational #6 Minnesota-Duluth. Last season ended in a loss in the Central Regional second round and a 28-6 record. The Bulldogs have been ranked for a stretch of 232 consecutive AVCA polls which is currently the longest running active streak in Division II. 

Entry into all games during the tournament will be free of charge.

UWA's original tournament this weekend, the Bahama House Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle, was canceled due to original forecasts of Hurricane Dorian making landfall in Florida.
