Tigers Clip Falcons 72-63 to Sweep Season Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – When foul trouble seemed to put the win in peril, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team found answers from other sources on the way to a 72-63 win Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference action against the Montevallo Falcons.

UWA improved to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in the conference. A fourth straight loss for the Falcons dropped the team to 11-8 and 7-4 in the GSC.

"That was huge for our team as a whole to be able to play well down the stretch when LJ (LaJuan Hardy) went out," said Associate head coach Nick Woodruff. "We needed that bad to get the taste of West Florida out of our mouth. Hopefully a win like this going forward. Montevallo is a historic program and anytime you can win two against them it's a huge deal."

With 3:31 remaining in the fourth, starting point guard Hardy fouled out with the team ahead 62-52. While the Tigers were adjusting without the league leader in minutes played, Montevallo cut the lead to 64-60 with 1:50 left. However, a huge three from points leader Rene Scott and free throws from Justin Allison, Deandre Harper and Scott preserved the 72-63 victory down the stretch.

Scott went on to finish as the game's leading scorer with 23 points and added four assists, two steals and a steal. Hardy had 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals before fouling out while Mike Davis grabbed a team leading 11 rebounds.

Despite playing limited minutes in recent contests, Harper, a senior from Douglasville, Georgia, came up big in a resurgent night for him with 17 points (15 in the first half), 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

"Credit to him (Harper) for not shutting it down and have a bad attitude," said Woodruff. "Dre is a warrior. He battles and it was just a matter of time before he got back in there. He hit some big shots and we needed them."

As a team, UWA was 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from three and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free throw line.

The Tigers edged Montevallo on the boards 34-33 as well as in points off turnovers, 18-17, second chance points, 11-9, benched points, 23-10 and points in the paint, 34-22. The Falcons won in the fast break, 12-6.

Three UM players reached double figures led by Jonas Parker with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Wade Lowman had 14 points and Xavier Malcom had 13 points.

Montevallo was 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the line.

West Alabama returns Saturday night against the West Florida Argonauts. UWF defeated UWA last week, 61-49. However, the Argos will enter Pruitt Hall coming off a 72-66 road loss to Auburn Montgomery.
