Lady Falcons Hang On For Win at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Montevallo held off a pair of rallies by West Alabama to notch an 85-80 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over the Tigers Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Montevallo is now 15-4 overall and 9-2 in GSC play. West Alabama's record evened at 9-9 and dipped to 4-8 in league play.

Four Lady Falcons scored in double figures as Montevallo built a 14-point lead in in the second quarter only to see West Alabama rally to tie the game at 31-31 by halftime. Montevallo stretched its lead back to double digits in the second half before UWA rallied to cut the UM advantage to 77-76 on an 8-0 run with 2:56 left to play.

"We started off lethargic, didn't come out the gate ready to play and dug ourselves a hole," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Defensively we were mediocre at best. Montevallo hit threes when we were in a zone and we didn't have an answer for them inside."

Montevallo put the game away at the free throw line down the stretch with Marisa Snodgrass and Aaliyah Rice combining to hit 5-of-6 free throws in the last 53 seconds. The Lady Falcons hit 10 free throws in 15 trips in the final quarter while UWA went to the line just twice, making both.

Shyan Flack led UM scoring with 20 points, followed by Kiya Sain with 18. Snodgrass and Rice added 16 points apiece. Rice had nine rebounds, while Snodgrass contributed six assists and four steals.

Bria Dent led all scorers with 25 points while collecting 17 rebounds for her sixth consecutive double-double, her 12th overall. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett notched her sixth double-double with 20 points and 11 boards. Naelyn Rios chipped in 11 points and Miya Kimber collected six rebounds coming off the bench.

"Bria and Tazsa showed up to play and kept us in the ballgame," Cram said. "I am glad they are on our team, but we have to have help from some other players. Bria played 40 minutes and Tazsa 36."

West Alabama won the battle on the glass, outrebounding UM 41-33, but the Lady Falcons turned 21 Tiger turnovers into 17 points.

"I'm disappointed," Cram said. "Obviously turnovers are still a problem for us."

Montevallo lead for over 35 minutes, UWA for 2:06 and the game was tied for just over two minutes. There was only one lead change and the game was tied twice.

West Alabama is host to West Florida (6-15, 2-11) Saturday at 4 p.m. Montevallo is host to Valdosta State (14-5, 6-5) Saturday.
