Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Stifle Bucs in Road Win, 69-51

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In a matchup that wasn't as close as the final score suggests and it was still a sizeable margin, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team used a 23-7 run to start the second half on the way to a 69-51 victory over the Christian Brothers Buccaneers Thursday night in Gulf South Conference action at the Canale Arena.

With the win, UWA improved to 11-3 on the season and 4-2 in the GSC. CBU fell to 5-9 and 2-5 in league play.

"The score says it all. Holding them to 51 points is a phenomenal effort defensively. They got a bunch of them late," said Associate head coach Nick Woodruff. "If we hold teams to this much, we should have a good chance of winning the game. That was a goal of ours coming into it."

During the 23-7 run, the Tigers built as much as a 25-point lead before four consecutive three-pointers from the Bucs cut the lead back to a manageable margin.

Four UWA players finished in double figures led by 13 points from Rene Scott who added a steal and an assist. Mike Davis went for 12 points and nine rebounds; LaJuan Hardy turned in 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals and Justin Allison scored 10 points with a pair of rebounds and a steal.

"We've talked about that since Saturday. We have to have multiple guys get into the box score," said Woodruff. "Those guys have the scoring in them. It's just finding their way in our offense and figuring out what to do."

The Tigers won in all the measurable categories. They outrebounded CBU 35-24, scored more points on turnovers 26-13, had more second chance points 8-4, more points in the paint 26-16, bench points 28-6 and in the fast break 7-4. The Bucs committed 21 turnovers compared to 15 for West Alabama.

As a unit, UWA was 43.1 percent (35-of-58) from the floor, 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from behind the arc and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line.

"A conference road win is hard to get," said Woodruff. "You can ask any coach in America, the league they are in is the toughest league. Going on the road and winning is tough and it's a testament to our guys for the effort they've put in during the week and tonight. We're proud of them."

Aiden Ruthsatz paced Christian Brothers with 15 points and Brad Miller scored 13.

CBU finished 41.5 percent (17-of-41) in total shots, 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from the three-point line and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line. With two more free throws, the Bucs took 17 less shots.
West Alabama now turns the focus to Union University (10-5, 4-3) who survived a missed shot at the buzzer to defeat Auburn Montgomery 63-62 Thursday night. Tipoff in Jackson, Tennessee is set for 4 p.m. with the radio broadcast available on ESPN 104.9
