Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Erase Halftime Deficit for 71-69 Win over CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Down five at the half, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team roared back to get up as much as 15 points before settling on a 71-69 win over the Christian Brothers Buccaneers Thursday night in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA improved to 18-6 overall and 11-5 in the GSC. CBU fell to 11-13 on the season and 7-9 in league play.

The Tigers went to the locker room down 29-24 at the half. However, the second half saw UWA surge to a 15-point, 68-48 lead at the 6:38 mark before reaching the two-point win as CBU scored a bucket as time expired.

"Well LaJuan Hardy played, that had a lot to do with it. We sat him a lot in the first half and I thought it was good for him and the team," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "He responded in the second half and played really well. He kind of willed us to a win."

Sharpe continued, "We had a talk on Monday about what's on the line and I think the guys realize that and knew it. We had a little more urgency that second half and it showed."

Hardy finished with 14 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks all in the second half. Ricky Dunnaway led the Tigers with 18 points along with eight rebounds, four blocks and a steal.

"Ricky is steady. If we throw it to him enough, he'll score about 15 to 20 points," said Sharpe. "We have to have more production and efficiency from our guards."

Chris Dudley added 13 points, five rebounds and an assist while Justin Allison put up 11 points, eight rebounds, a steal and an assist.

The Tigers were 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from the three and 50 percent (4-of-8) from the line.

Mitchell Mays led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor and eight rebounds. Jacob Lyons went for 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

"They make it tough. When you have a four-man (Mays) that can shoot threes and make jumpers, it makes it really hard to double the post," said Sharpe. "At halftime we took our chances playing one-on-one down low. We didn't have an answer. We did just enough to hold on to win."

Malik Jones had 14 points and six assists for the Bucs.

The weekend gets no easier for West Alabama as the Tigers prepare to host the Union Bulldogs (17-7, 11-5) Saturday at 4 p.m. UU came away with an 80-72 victory in overtime against Montevallo earlier tonight.

"Union is very scary. They have very good guard play and shoot the three very well," said Sharpe. "They stretch the defense because they make shots. It's going to be tough to keep that score low enough to give us a chance to win. Tyree Boykin is probably the best player in the league
