Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

West Georgia Hands UWA a 74-52 Loss

CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia led for all but 13 seconds on the way to a 74-52 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory Thursday over West Alabama at The Coliseum on the UWG campus.

Snapping a three-game losing skid, West Georgia is now 15-10 overall and 8-9 in league play. West Alabama lost for the fifth straight time, falling to 10-14 and 5-13.

Neither team shot particularly well, with the Tigers making just 37 percent (20-of-54) and the Wolves 39 percent (27-of-69). The difference came from beyond the three-point line, with West Georgia making 12 and West Alabama one, a 33-point difference in a 22-point loss.

West Georgia led 34-24 at the half in spite of missing eight of its last nine shots in the first 20 minutes. The Wolves did not score in the final 4:13 of the second period, but West Alabama's well ran dry for the final 3:05 as well.

After a quick drip the drought continued for UWA to start the third period. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett hit a three-pointer right out of the third-period gate before the Tigers missed six straight. Following a Zoe Watts layup with 4:03 to play in the third quarter, UWA did not score the rest of the way in the period to trail 56-38.

"We just can't score," Tiger head coach Rusty Cram said. "We have been in a scoring slump for about three weeks now."

West Georgia took advantage of 22 Tiger turnovers, converting them into 18 points. UWA managed to score just four points off 13 Wolve miscues.

Garrett-Hammett and Watts combined for all but 10 of West Alabama's points. Garrett-Hammett converted 8-of-9 field goal attempts to lead all scorers with 22 points. Watts poured in a career-best 20 points. Bria Dent collected 18 rebounds to give her 67 over her last four games (16.8 pg).

"Tazsa and Zoe obviously had big games, accounting for almost all of our points in a career scoring night for Zoe," Cram said. "Bria continues to be dominant rebounding the basketball."

Four Wolves scored in double figures, led by Siera Carter with 17 and Ashley Lee with 15. Edley Drawhorn and Kylah Mize chipped in 13 each. Carter collected 10 rebounds for her first double-double.

West Alabama remains on the road Saturday at Valdosta State. Tipoff is 1 p.m. central time. West Georgia travels to Shorter.
