Tigers Fall in Back and Forth Affair with #12 VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga. – In a matchup between two of the premier teams in the NCAA South Region, home court proved to be advantageous as the University of West Alabama men's basketball team fell at the Complex to #12 Valdosta State Blazers 75-67 in Gulf South Conference action. 
 
UWA falls to 20-7 on the season and 13-6 in GSC play. VSU improved to 22-3 on the year and 16-2 in league play while extending their winning streak to 15 games.
 
The lead changed hands 18 times and was tied on eight separate occasions during the contest with nine lead changes and four separate ties in the second half. 
 
West Alabama took a narrow 31-28 lead to the half. Valdosta State outscored the Tigers 47-36 in the second half en route to the 74-67 final.
 
Foul trouble played a large factor in this one as well as three Tiger starters were whistled for four files and forced the Tigers to rely on the bench more than usual. Every UWA player who checked into the game played at least 10 minutes.
 
Despite his foul troubles Ricky Dunnaway led the team with 18 points along with seven rebounds and two assists. LaJuan Hardy had 16 points and a team leading eight rebounds along with six steals and three assists. Darron Johnson added 12 points, an assist and a steal.
 
The Tigers shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the floor, 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from the three and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free throw line including a perfect 10-for-10 in the second half.
 
Meanwhile, the Blazers were 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field, 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from three and 75 percent (18-of-24) from line. 
 
Both teams committed 15 turnovers, but VSU took more of advantage in points of turnovers 17-12. Because of the foul trouble, UWA's bench was able to outscore the Blazers 12-8. However, Valdosta State was able to dominate in the paint 52-36. 
 
Clay Guillozet scored 18 to lead VSU while Bryce Smith and Imoras Agee scored 16 points each and Darrell Jones added 13 points.
 
The Tigers return to action on Feb. 29 in Pruitt Hall for senior day against Mississippi College. Before the game, the team will honor the eight senior members of the 2019-2020 team.
 
Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium with the game being broadcast on ESPN 104.9.
