Argos Win Series with Strong Start against Tigers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Florida Argonauts jumped on the University of West Alabama softball team in the early innings and the Tigers could not recover and suffered a 9-2 loss in the Gulf South Conference series finale Sunday afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex.
 
UWA fell to 5-10 on the season and 2-4 in the GSC while UWF improved to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.
 
While the Tigers were outhit in this one 11-1, West Alabama had opportunities with seven runners left on base thanks to three UWF errors and four walks drawn. The Argos left five runners on base.
 
West Florida got it started early in the first Teala Howard scored on a sacrifice fly by Grace Gilbert. Mika Garcia stole home and Ashley McNally followed with RBI single to put the Argos up 3-0.
 
UWF added two more runs in the second inning with RBIs from Howard and Angela Agurkis to take a 5-0 lead. 
 
Haylie Best helped the Tigers avoid a shutout with an RBI on a fielder's choice to let Hayes Fulford score from third in the sixth inning. A wild pitch on ball four during Mckinley Parris's at bat allowed Lee Lee Parker to trout in from third to score to 6-2.
 
In the seventh, Agurkis hit an RBI double, Laurynn Boggs scored on a wild pitch and Jibrasia Moore got an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-2 which held as the final for the contest.
 
Haley Thorpe (1-3) went 0.1 innings with a hit, walk and two earned runs. Kamree Lay pitched six innings with three batters struck out. She allowed nine hits and five earned runs. Kat Burks pitch 0.2 innings with a hit and a run surrendered. 
 
Megan Warhurst (3-1) pitched 5.2 innings with four strikeouts, four walks and a hit allowed. Kelsey Sweatt pitched the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout.
 
West Alabama will look to regroup and prepare for a GSC road trip next week to take on Alabama Huntsville (9-6, 4-2) at Charger Park. UAH defeated Union today to take the series in Jackson, Tenn.
