Tigers Fall in Season Finale against Lady Choctaws, 70-62

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – While it wasn't the desired outcome, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team battled with the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws in Gulf South Conference action before eventually falling 70-62 Saturday afternoon in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA concluded the season with an 11-15 overall record and 6-14 mark in the GSC. MC pulled even on the year at 13-13 and 10-10 in league play.

"They did play hard. I was pleased with the effort," said Head coach Rusty Cram. Mississippi College just had too much inside."

Bria Dent posted her 17th double double of the season and led the West Alabama effort with 16 points and 16 rebounds along with two steals.

"Bria continues to get better in the areas she needed to coming into this season," said Cram. "Love her work ethic. She's 5-foot-8 and 17 double doubles says it all."

Naelyn Rios finished with 15 points while Tazsa Garrett-Hammett, who was wearing number 11 in the game to honor her sister Fannasy Garrett-Hammett, finished with 15 points, three steals, three rebounds, two assists and a block.

Fannasy, one of the three senior members of the program honored before the contest, had her career cut short due to a car accident back in April 2016.

Three-year player Sydney Bozeman and graduate transfer Andrea Petrovic were the other two members of the roster honored. Bozeman had her senior season cut short due to injury issues while Petrovic went for eight points and four rebounds against MC to end her career.

The Lady Choctaws got out to a 23-17 lead after the first quarter, but the Tigers won the second period 18-17 as MC took a 40-35 lead to the half. In the third, Mississippi College won the 10 minutes 19-13 but UWA won the fourth 14-11. In the end, MC had the eight-point, 70-62 advantage as time expired.

Four Lady Choctaws finished in double figures as Moriah Hurst led with 18 points, Zariah Matthews scored 15, Coco Hobson put up 13 points and 12 rebounds while Kaitlyn Thompson scored 11 points.
