Tigers Sweep Second Day of Red-White-Blue Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of West Alabama softball team brought the bats to Cougar Field during the second day of the Red-White-Blue Classic hosted by Columbus State University as UWA scored 13 runs during both games with a 11-10 win over Lynn and a 2-0 victory against Erskine.

The Tigers (8-14) started the day with a barn burner in the second matchup with Lynn in as many days.

The Fighting Knights took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Chrissy Tubbs cut the lead to one with her first career home run as a Tiger and it was good for three runs as Hayes Fulford and Abby McKee scored in the play.

UWA continued the eight-straight runs onslaught with three runs in the second starting with an RBI double by Kendall Johnson to left center to bring in Lee Lee Parker. Johnson then scored on a single by Cassie Matlock and then Matlock scored on a wild pitch to put the Tigers up 6-4.

Johnson added a two RBI single to bring in Alli Craft and Kailey Hunt to put UWA ahead 8-4.

Grasy Gomez smashed a three-run homer to close the gap to 8-7 in the fourth.

However, UWA responded with three straight runs with two in the fifth thanks another RBI by Johnson to bring in Lexy House and a single by McKee to bring in Haylie Best. Best then had an RBI single to score Tubbs to push the UWA lead to 11-7.

Lynn scored three runs in the seventh but could not complete the rally as West Alabama escaped with the 11-10 win.

Caleigh Wallace (3-7) earned the win with a strike out and allowed nine hits, four earned runs and a walk.

In the second game of the day against Erskine, Best scored the first run on an error in the third inning. Then in the sixth, Best got an RBI single to score House to put UWA 2-0 which held as the final score.

Lay (4-4) went 5.1 innings for the relief appearance win. She threw four strikeouts and allowed five hits in the victory.
