Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Offense Struggles in Road Loss to Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – While the defense was able to hold the Union University Bulldogs under the season scoring averags, the University of West Alabama Men's basketball didn't have enough offense and fell on the road 61-58 Friday night at the Fred DeLay Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference action.

"There's just not much difference in winning or losing.  Especially in our games, we're taking about a possession here or a possession there," said Head coach Nick Woodruff. "Give credit to Union. They did a great job of making things really hard for us to score."

UWA (2-1) shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor and 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from the three-point line. The Tigers shot just 29.6 percent in the second half (8-of-27) and missed all four shots from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, Union finished 48.9 percent (22-of-45) from the floor after a blazing second half where the Bulldogs went 56 percent (14-of-25). However, the team was just 25 percent (3-of-12) from behind the arc the entire game.

"Our guys did a tremendous job in holding them to three three-pointers made. That is really hard to do with a team that relies heavily on the three-point shot," said Woodruff. "It's definitely not an issue with effort. This group plays hard enough. It's on me as the coach to continue to push us along and improve so that we are able to win close games."

The Tigers looked strong after jumping out to a 9-3 lead following a layup from Roger Davis. However, Union answered with an 11-2 run to take 14-11 lead at the 11:06 mark in the first half.

The teams traded the lead from there, but West Alabama pushed to a 34-31 advantage at the half.

Davis hit a jumper at the 18:20 mark in the second half and would serve as the final high mark for UWA in the contest as Union took the 43-42 lead at 14:24 after a bucket from JC Hawkins that the Tigers would never overcome.

"If we want to be a good team, we have to win conference games on the road. Finding a way to do that is the really hard part," said Woodruff.

Davis led UWA in scoring with 16 points along with four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Kortrijk Miles, Amiri Waddell and Shardarrion Allen all scored 12 points with Allen and Waddell also snagging six rebounds. Justin Allison led with five assists and added four points.

Dusan Djordjevic led Union with 16 points as Jeremiah Littlepage and Ousmane Gueye both finished in double figures with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Hunter Vick and Tylandrius Parks both pulled down nine boards to lead the Bulldogs.

Union outrebounded the Tigers 35-26, but also committed more turnovers with 17 compared to only nine for UWA. West Alabama came away with a season high 13 steals and limited the Bulldogs to just two steals.

The two teams wrap the two-game series tomorrow with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m. Links to live stats and live video are available on uwaathletics.com.
