Union Never Trailed in 88-55 Win at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Eleven players scored, three in double figures, as Union led from tap to buzzer in an 88-55 win over West Alabama in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Union improved to 6-2 with its 10th straight win over West Alabama, including twice in less than 20 hours. West Alabama dropped to 3-3 in its sixth consecutive home game.

"We were never in this one," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "If you keep turning it over unforced, it will kill you against a team like Union.

"Against a team that good you want to limit their possessions as much as possible and then work the clock," Cram said. "We could not work the clock because we kept turning it over."

West Alabama had 19 turnovers Saturday and 37 in the two-game series against the Lady Bulldogs.

Shanique Lucas led all scorers with 23 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Selale Kepenc and Jordan Little chipped in 14 apiece. Kepenc and Jaelencia Williams each collected eight rebounds as Union outrebounded the Tigers 40-26. The Lady Bulldogs doubled the Tigers up on the offensive boards, 16-8.

"When you give up 16 offensive rebounds, that's pathetic," Cram said. "They shoot it well enough that you don't need to keep giving them second chances."

The Lady Bulldogs connected on 12 three-pointers, including four by Lucas. Eight Union players were credited with at least one of the Lady Bulldogs 20 assists, led by Sadie Knee with five.

Naelyn Rios led West Alabama with 14 points. Bria Dent recorded her third double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dent had a double-double in both games against Union over the weekend. Jada Golden had three steals for UWA.

West Alabama has 10 days off before traveling to Mississippi College on Jan. 26. Union begins a four-game homestretch by hosting Mississippi College Friday.
