Tigers Remain Unbeaten on Road, Defeat #20 Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – The stars have to shine when the team is on the road and that is exactly what happened for the University of West Alabama Women's basketball team as the Tigers beat the #20 Union University Lady Bulldogs 64-57 Friday night in Fred DeLay Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference West Division action.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led all scorers with a season high 27 points including a perfect 13-for-13 effort from the free throw line along with seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Bria Dent posted her fourth double-double of the season and 27th in her career with 12 points and 16 rebounds and added four steals and a block.

"Tazsa carried us through the first quarter offensively," said Head coach Rusty Cram. Bria did her usual work on the boards as well. They were very focused.

Naelyn Rios added 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals while Jala Williams led the squad with seven assists along with five points and two steals.

While the leaders shined bright, the game was still a total team effort defensively as the Tigers (6-3, 5-3 GSC) limited Union (8-3) to 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor and 12.1 percent (4-of-33) from three, both of which are season lows for the Lady Bulldogs.

"I thought we played exceptional defense all night," said Cram. "Winning our prior two games on the road gave us confidence that we really needed. Union is one of the premier teams in the country year in and year out. Getting a win here is huge. So proud of these ladies."

The win for West Alabama is the first win over Union since a home win over the Lady Bulldogs back on Jan. 21, 2017, 71-62. UWA moved to 3-0 on the road with the victory.

Union jumped out to an early 20-14 lead after the first quarter where Garrett-Hammett scored 12 of the team's 14 points to keep the Tigers within striking distance.

In the second quarter, UWA got down by seven points after a made free throw from Jaelencia Williams to give the Lady Bulldogs a 23-16 lead. However, from there it was all Tigers as made chance made layup for Garrett-Hammett at the 3:55 mark to go up 26-25 and Dent put the team up for good with 22 seconds left in the first half to give UWA a 29-27 lead which held for the rest of the contest.

The Tigers went on to get up by as much as 12 points in the fourth quarter with 3:37 remaining after Jada Golden drained two free throws to make the score 58-46 on the way to the 64-57 final margin.

Selale Kepenc led Union with 17 points, Williams finished with 11 points and nine rebounds and Emily Beard scored 11 points.
