Tigers Rally, Come Up Short at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – West Alabama's fourth quarter rally came up just short as Union held on for a 58-48 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win over the Tigers Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

After defeating the nationally-ranked Lady Bulldogs on Friday with just eight players dressed out, the Tigers cut the Union lead to three points at 51-48 on free throws by Jala Williams with three minutes to play, but that's as close as UWA would get before Union closed the game on a 7-0 run for the final margin.

UWA (6-4, 5-4 GSC) shot 33 percent (18-of-54) from the floor and 25 percent (6-of-24) from beyond the three-point line. Meanwhile, Union (9-3) shot 36 percent (18-of-50), but managed to make 11 threes in 34 tries (32 percent).

"I thought our defense kept us in the game until we could find the rim," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Sure, we were a little tight, but we had to fight through it.

"I am really proud of our basketball team," Cram said. "We worked hard. We got better today. Nobody likes to lose, but sometimes good comes out of it. We leave here with our heads held high."

Bria Dent finished with 14 points to lead UWA scoring along with nine rebounds, a steal and an assist. Jala Williams matched her career high with 13 points and added five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Rose Smith matched Dent on the boards with nine. The Tigers leading scorer, Tazsa Garrett-Hammett, battled foul trouble and scored just four points in 20 minutes before fouling out with just over six minutes to play.

Union jumped out to a lead early with a 12-1 run to start the game, capped by a layup from Jaelencia Williams at 4:08 in the first. Smith connected on a layup with just under four minutes left in the quarter for UWA's first field goal of the game to make it 12-3. The Lady Bulldogs led 18-6 after one quarter.

After a 17-14 second quarter in favor of Union to make the score 35-20 at the half, West Alabama got the offense going in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 15-9 over thee third 10 minutes.

Three Union players ended up in double figures as Jaelencia Williams notched a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds, Eamily Beard had 12 points and Selale Kepenc scored 11 points.

The Tigers six-game road tour continues with two games at Alabama Huntsville scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. in Spragins Hall. Links to live stats and live video will be available on uwaathletics.com.
