Women’s Soccer Defeats AUM 4-1 in GSC Matchup Friday Night

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's soccer outshot Auburn Montgomery 12-6 to claim the 4-1 victory over the Warhawks in a Gulf South Conference matchup Friday night at Tiger Stadium. 

UWA improved its overall record to 7-2-1 and is now 5-1 in GSC play. AUM dropped to 4-6 overall and is now 2-5 in GSC play. 

"I am really happy with the execution tonight," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "I thought we attacked the ball very well. Credit to AUM, they have a team that can make it difficult for you in this field."

"I thought we defended well, and then the execution for set plays made us get a foothold in the game," Orr said. "We were able to use the depth of the bench which I was really pleased about, so hopefully we can come on Sunday and have a lot of energy because Montevallo is a great team. They possess the ball very well, and we need to be on top form."

Senior Anele Komani started the night off for the Tigers, as she found the back of the net in the 19th minute, making that her third goal of the season.

Dana Cruz improved UWA's lead to 2-0 when she scored in the 23rd minute off an assist from Megan Ongteco. AUM responded five seconds later with a goal from midfielder Anila Mantello to cut the Tigers' lead 2-1.

Brianna Forrest's header in the 56th minute improved the Tigers' lead to 3-1, making that her second goal of the season. 

Two minutes later, Cruz kicked the ball right past the keeper off an assist from Kaylah Butterworth to close out the match with a 4-1 victory over Auburn Montgomery.

The Tigers' goalie Tabitha Weldon allowed one goal and recorded two saves in her 90 minutes of action. 

Karla Gaytan was the Warhawks' goalkeeper. She allowed four goals and had five saves in the matchup.

UWA fired off 12 shots with nine of them being on frame. Six shots were taken in the first and second half. AUM took six shots with three being on frame. Three shots were taken in each half.

There were 13 fouls called in the match. The Tigers were called for six, while the Warhawks were called for seven of them.

West Alabama hosts Montevallo Sunday, October 17. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
