WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The West Alabama volleyball had a full weekend, playing three matches at the GSC/SSC Crossover in Winter Haven, Fla. During the two-day event, the Tigers faced Saint Leo University, Flagler College, and Rollins College. UWA went 0-3 in the tournament and fell to 1-17 on the season.
Saint Leo [L, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-15)]
The Tigers played hard against the Lions with a close set in the second frame. On the offensive side, junior outside hitter Nathalia Medeiros led UWA with 10 kills on 46 swings. Desiree Blount fed the offense in the setter position to record 26 assists on the night. The Marietta, Ga. native also picked up two kills, one service ace, and six digs. Amelia Johnigan and Isabela Sarti added six and five kills, respectively, to West Alabama's scoring.
Madison Fisher and Quiara Dunson led the defense with 16 digs each. Fisher also contributed three service aces and four kills to the offensive effort.
As a team, the Tigers landed 30 kills on 116 swings for a .138 hitting percentage. They tallied 60 digs and six service aces on the outing.
Saint Leo recorded 54 kills with 134 total attacks for a .313 hitting percentage. As a team, the Lions had six digs and four service aces. Elizabeth Sandoval led the team with 16 kills on 36 swings, and Payton Bellano led with match-high 29 digs.
Flagler College [L, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-80]
West Alabama started strong in the first set and trailed the Lions by two or three points for most of the frame. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not retain that energy throughout the match to fall 3-0 to Flagler.
In match two, Madison Fisher stepped up on the offensive side of the ball to lead the team in kills with seven on 22 swings. She also helped the defense with 10 digs. Other offensive contributors include Nathalia Medieros and Isabela Sarti with five kills each and Johanna Martin with three.
Leading the defense, Mackenzie Wells covered the floor to tally 15 digs. She was also credited with one service ace.
As a unit, the Tigers recorded 22 kills on 95 total attacks. They also accumulated 38 digs and three service aces.
Flagler had 39 kills on 90 total attacks and nine service aces. On the defense, the Lions recorded 47 digs, three solo blocks, and six block assists.
Rollins College [L, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-19)]
Chyna Dixon had her first offensive lead of the season, leading the Tigers with seven kills in match three. The freshmen from South Carolina took 18 swings in the effort. Also, on offense, Madison Fisher landed six kills, while Nathalia Mederios had five.
MacKenize Wells covered the floor to bring up 12 digs on the defense, while Quiara Dunson had 10.
In the match, the Tigers tallied 24 kills on 89 total attacks. UWA also had 37 digs, four service aces, and five total blocks.
Rollins had 37 kills on 97 swings. The team also recorded 39 digs, two solo blocks, 12 block assists, and 13 service aces.
