Butterworth Scored Penalty Kick Goal in 89th Minute to Claim 1-0 Victory over MC

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - After a scoreless first half, Kaylah Butterworth found the bottom right side of the net off a penalty kick in the 89th minute of the match to claim a 1-0 victory over Mississippi College Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

"Obviously after two losses we needed something to kick start our season," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. " We had to rebound today. We asked the girls for a performance and everyone on the squad delivered."

"I have a lot of respect for the MC team," Orr said. "They are a fantastic team and caused a lot of problems for us. They battled extremely well, but I thought we deserved that win today. We fought a couple of close battles over the years and we edged that one today."

With the win, the Tigers improved to 4-2-1 overall and are 2-1 in GSC play. The Choctaws dropped to 6-3 overall and are 4-2 in the conference.

Neither team scored until a Mississippi College player fouled Anele Komani in the final minute of the match, giving UWA a chance to take a lead.

Butterworth was chosen to kick for the Tigers and found the bottom right side of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead over the Choctaws, making that her first goal of the season.

UWA's defense held MC's offense in the final minute of the match to claim the 1-0 victory over Mississippi College and hand them their second GSC loss.

The Tigers' goalie was Tabitha Weldon. The Orange Park, Florida native recorded five saves as she faced 13 shots in the 90 minutes of action.

The Choctaws' goalkeeper Sarah Maleski recorded three saves as she faced 12 shots, and allowed one goal in the 90 minutes she played.

Mississippi College outshot West Alabama by one. The Choctaws took 13 shots while the Tigers fired off 12, four being on frame.

Mikayla Anderson, Paige Laidler, Nikol Gonzalez, and Komani each took two shots. Anderson, Laidler, and Butterworth each added a shot on goal to the mix.

There were four yellow cards and 26 fouls called in the physical contest. The Choctaws were called for 17 while the Tigers were called for 9.

"Now we set the standards high, and we have to recover and go again Friday against Christian Brothers," Orr said.
