Women’s Soccer Defeats Christian Brothers 1-0 in GSC Matchup

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The West Alabama women's soccer team defeated Christian Brothers 1-0 in a Gulf South Conference matchup Friday night at Signaigo Field.

With the win, The Tigers improved to 5-2-1 overall and are now 3-1 in GSC play. The Bucs dropped 6-4 overall and are now 4-2 in the conference. 

"This was a great result away from home," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "The girls played some great stuff in the first half. The leadership of Anele Komani, Paige Laidler, and Brianna Forrest was vital."

The only goal of the night came within nine seconds of the match. Dana Cruz scored to give UWA an early 1-0 lead.

Both teams battled but neither team scored in the second half making the final score 1-0. 

Christian Brothers took 12 shots, four being on frame. West Alabama fired off seven shots, five being on frame. 

UWA's goalie Tabitha Weldon record four saves in the victory as she faced seven shots in the 90 minutes of action. 

CBU's goalkeeper Chloe Hillyer allowed one goal and recorded one save as she faced three shots in the first half of the match. Riley Chafin finished between the posts for the Bucs and recorded three saves as she faced four shots in her 45 minutes of action. 

There were two yellow cards and 11 fouls called in the physical contest. The Bucs were called for six while the Tigers were called for five.

The Tigers take on Union Sunday in Jackson, Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
