Big Third Quarter Propels Young Harris, Tigers Fall Short on Road

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Young Harris had five players scoring in double figures to defeat West Alabama women's basketball team 67-55 in a non-conference matchup Monday afternoon at the Mountain Lions' Recreational and Fitness Center.  

The Tigers drop to 7-3 overall and remain 1-1 in GSC play. The Mountain Lions improve to 8-1 on the season. 

Bria Dent posted her fourth double-double of the season. The Birmingham, Alabama native paced the Tigers with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The junior guard went 6-for-11 from the field, 2-for-3 three from beyond the arc, and 5-for-7 from the free throw line. 

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett added 15 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Lauryn Lilly contributed 10 points and three assists. Justyna Butler chipped in six points and three assists. Jala Williams added five points and four assists to round out the Tigers' scoring.

Young Harris struck first and missed a layup 30 seconds after tip-off. With 8:32 remaining in the first quarter, YHC knocked down one free throw to start the game with a 1-0 lead over UWA. Dent responded with a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 3-1 advantage over the Mountain Lions. With 7:58 remaining in the first quarter, West Alabama outscored Young Harris 20-12 to give the Tigers a 23-13 lead. 

The Mountain Lions scored the first five points of the second quarter. With 7:31 remaining, Dent made a layup and a free throw to extend the Tigers' lead to 25-18. At the 5:31 mark, Young Harris went on a 9-5 run to close out the second quarter and cut UWA's lead to 31-27.

In the third quarter, the Tigers got outscored by the Mountain Lions 27-7, allowing YHC to pull ahead of UWA 54-40. Garrett-Hammett and Lilly were the only two Tigers that scored in the third quarter. 

The Tigers won the fourth quarter, 15-13 after a back-and-forth battle, but still trailed the whole period and took a 67-55 defeat from the Mountain Lions. 

As a unit, UWA shot 34 percent (18-of-53) from the floor and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the free throw line. 

Dashaun Jackson posted a double-double for the Mountain Lions. The forward scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds. YHC had four other players scoring in double figures.

YHC shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from the three-point line, and 75 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line. 

Young Harris outscored West Alabama in the paint 30-18. The Tigers turned the Mountain Lions 11 turnovers into 15 points. UWA won in bench points 16-3.

The Tigers are back in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium Saturday, Dec. 18 to battle Shorter in a GSC matchup. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
