Tigers Pick Up First Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama jumped to a 10-run lead after three innings and then hung on to defeat Mississippi College, 12-8, in Gulf South Conference baseball on a chilly, 34-degree Saturday at Tartt Field.

The win improves the Tigers to 1-3 overall, 1-3 in GSC play. Mississippi College remained winless at 0-4 and is 0-4 in league play. The Tigers and Choctaws finish the three-game series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.

"I was very pleased that we came out aggressively, swinging the bat like we are capable of," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "I am pleased with the win.

"When you start 0-3 any win is a good one," Rundles said. "We played just good enough to win and that is the main thing."

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run double from Gavin Rogers before adding four more in the second and five in the third. The Tigers took advantage of four consecutive bases-loaded walks from MC starter Dylan Marsh in the second, while Brayden Lyman doubled in two runs and Taylor Clemmons drove in two more with a single in the third.

Antonio Jenkins capped off West Alabama scoring with a solo home run in the fourth inning, his first of the season.

Mississippi College scored a single run in the second, two more in the fourth and fifth before ending their offensive effort with three runs in the seventh. Ken Scott went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and four runs batted in. Lance Willis chipped in two hits for Mississippi College.

Jake Nemith collected three hits for West Alabama. Clemmons, Lyman and Jenkins had two apiece. Clemmons, Lyman and Rogers each drove in three runs.
