Top Ranked Cougars Top UWA Men

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Christopher Bulus defeated the top-ranked player in NCAA Division at No. 1 singles, but it wasn't enough as West Alabama lost to top-ranked Columbus State, 5-2, in men's tennis Saturday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
 
Columbus State began the day by winning the doubles point by winning courts 1 and 3, then took four of six singles courts to win the match. 
 
The match was the first of the regular season for both Columbus State (1-0) and West Alabama (0-1).
 
"Chris defeating the top player in the nation is certainly a highlight," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "Five matches went three sets, so it was a very close match against the top team in the nation."
 
Bulus won No. 1 singles over Alvaro Regalado 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, handing the top-ranked D2 player in the nation his first loss of the year. Nuutti Jokinen also picked a singles win for West Alabama, defeating Javier Cueto Ramos 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 4.
 
Patricio Nieto and Ilia Dehodiuk were the Tigers only winners in doubles, defeating Felix Steen and Christian Garay 7-6.
 
West Alabama opens Gulf South Conference play Wednesday at Montevallo. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Columbus State plays at Auburn-Montgomery Sunday.
