UWA Women Defeat No. 5 CSU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama, ranked No. 21 in the nation, recorded a convincing upset over No. 5 Columbus State, 5-2, in women's tennis Saturday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
 
The match was the first of the regular season for both the Tigers (1-0) and the Lady Cougars (0-1).
 
The Tigers began the day by sweeping all three doubles courts and followed up by winning four of six singles matches.
 
"This was a great, hard-fought win against a great team," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "The women now need to get some rest because we are on the road early Sunday to play a strong Southern Miss team."
 
Sarah Manseri and Haden Ly won at No. 1 doubles. Haina Franco and Daryna Hukasian took the No. 2 doubles court, while Morgan Bishop and Valeria Arevalo won at No. 3.
 
Ly defeated Valentina Abrile 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Thea Yang took care of Sara Ramirez Goncalves 4-6, 6-3, 6-0  at No. 4. Arevalo won the No. 5 singles court 2-6, 6-4, 5-4 (retired) over Amanda Citre and Hardija Vidnere had little trouble at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Agostina Bigotti.
 
West Alabama travels to NCAA Division I Southern Miss on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. Columbus State also plays Sunday at Auburn-Montgomery.
