Southern Miss Hands Tigers First Loss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss swept doubles competition and then won five of six singles matches to defeat West Alabama, 6-1, in women's tennis Sunday at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility.
 
Daryna Hukasian provided West Alabama's only win of the afternoon, defeating Suhana Das 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
 
"This was a tough match against a very good Southern Miss team," Tiger head coach Jeff Beaman said. "We talked about how you need to win three days in a row to win a conference championship, and playing this match after yesterday's battle will only help us get stronger for later in the year."
 
The Tigers were coming off a 5-2 win over fifth-ranked Columbus State at home on Saturday in a match between two Division II top 25 teams. UWA is ranked 21st.
 
West Alabama is 1-1 and Southern Miss improved to 2-1.
 
The Tigers open Gulf South Conference play by hosting Montevallo Tuesday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex on the UWA campus. First serve is 2 p.m. USM is host to South Alabama Friday.
