Tigers Grab Crucial Road Win over CBU, 70-64

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – As the Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament picture begins to come in focus, the University of West Alabama Men's basketball team grabbed a coveted West Division win, 70-64, over the Christian Brothers Buccaneers Sunday afternoon in Canale Arena.

"I am pleased about our performance. We had a bad finish to the first half and a really poor start to the second," said Head coach Nick Woodruff. "Our guys were able to regroup and pull out the win and I am proud about the fight they showed."

UWA improved to 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the GSC West while CBU fell to 2-9.

Woodruff said, "I told them before the game that in the next couple weeks a lot of teams will be putting the shoes up as their season finish and by winning this game, we are able to keep our post season chances alive."

Shardarrion Allen posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds along with two blocks and a steal.

Robert Davis and Kortrijk Miles both scored 14 points each while Justin Allison put 10 points along with two steals and two assists.

Christian Brothers started the second half strong, led by six on six difference occasions and built as much as a seven-point lead by the 10:12 mark as Daryl Lewis hit the free throw to make the score 50-43.

"CBU is a tough team and their ball pressure really bothered us. We had a hard time running our offense, but we were able to settle in late in the 2nd half," said Woodruff. "We made some really critical baskets down the stretch and got a couple key stops that gave us the separation we needed to get the victory."

However, by the 7:30 mark the Tigers tied the game off an Allen layup to make it 52-52. CBU led one last time 57-56 at the 4:24 mark left in the second before the Tigers took the lead for good at 61-59 at the 3:10 mark and pushed to the 70-64 victory on the road.

West Alabama controlled the game throughout most of the contest and held the lead 26:05 of the 40 minutes game. The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start capped by a three-point bucket from Chase Sanders at the 17:17 mark. However, the Bucs responded with a 7-0 run of their own as Aiden Ruthsatz connected on a three to tie the ball game, 7-7, with 14:45 left in the first.

By the 9:35 mark, the Tigers built their largest lead of the game at eight points using a 12-4 run capped by a free throw made on an old school three-point play from Allen to put UWA up 19-11. West Alabama went on to take a 30-28 lead to the locker room after never trailing in the half.

As a unit, UWA shot 50 percent (22-of-45) from the floor, 40 percent (6-of-15) at the arc and 75 percent (21-of-28) at the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Bucs were 48.9 percent (22-of-45) shooting, 40 percent (6-of-15) from three and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the line.

The Tigers won the battle of the boards 31-21 and outmuscled CBU down low points in the paint (42-26) and on second chance points (11-7).

"We are going to have to be prepared for 40 more minutes of tough basketball tomorrow," said Woodruff. "We are going to watch the tape and talk about the turnovers and all the easy baskets we gave up. Our defense has to continue to improve and a 24 hour turn around is a great opportunity to see if we can."

Both teams will meet tomorrow to wrap the two-game series in Canale Arena with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. Links to live video and live stats will be available on uwaathletics.com.
