Tiger Women Clinch GSC Tourney Spot

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama clinched a berth in the 2021 Gulf South Conference Tournament and Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored a career-high 32 points as the Tigers cruised to a 68-41 women's basketball victory over Christian Brothers Monday at Pruitt Hall.

The win improves West Alabama to 9-6 overall, 8-6 in GSC play and keeps the Tigers in contention to host a first round game in the GSC Tournament on March 2. Christian Brothers dropped to 4-8 and 4-8.

"I am so proud of these kids. It has been an unbelievable year, but to be able to get to the tournament and get that behind us, that was their first goal," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "The next goal is to get to the GSC championship game, then the national championship tournament."

Garrett-Hammett converted 8-of-15 from the floor and 15-of-20 from the free throw line on the way to her career night. She also collected seven rebounds. Bria Dent notched her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

"I was very pleased with our kids tonight. Tazsa had 32 and we held their leading scorer to 24," Cram said. "We did a really good job with rebounding, free-throws and our turnovers. We focused on that tonight and it paid off."

Brynne Lytle scored 24 points to lead CBU, giving her 60 points in the two game set, but she made just 6-of-20 from the floor and 1-of-10 from behind the three point arc. She was the only CBU player in double figures as the Tiger defense limited the Lady Bucs to just 12-of-51 (23 percent) from the floor and 2-of-27 (7 percent) from long range.

"The difference in the game for us was when we couldn't score for the longest and then getting some transition points," Cram said. "We got a couple steals, long rebounds, and a couple of breakaway transition points and that kind of broke their back and it took their legs out. Once your legs go, your shooting pays a price."

West Alabama led for just over 37 minutes of the game and the lead changed hands just four times.

For the second straight day the Tigers owned the paint, outrebounding CBU 46-31 and outscoring the Lady Bucs 38-18 between the lane lines.

UWA made 20-of-49 from the field (40 percent) and converted 27-of-36 free throw attempts (75 percent).

Owners of a three-game winning streak, the Tigers are scheduled to travel to Delta State (6-9, 6-9) for a two-game set beginning Friday. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Tigers opened the season with a pair of wins over the Lady Statesmen in Livingston, 74-54  on Dec. 12 and, 54-47, on Dec. 13.
