Tigers Go Wire to Wire in Win over DSU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Men's basketball team was all business tonight as the Tigers never trailed in a 70-53 win over the Delta State Statesmen Friday night in Gulf South Conference action in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA moved to 7-5 overall with the win and 6-5 in GSC competition while DSU dropped to 4-8 on the season.

"I'm extremely proud of our effort tonight," said Head coach Nick Woodruff. "Holding a Delta State team with the players they have to 53 is a phenomenal effort. They average over 75 points and score it as good as anyone in the league."

Six Tigers scored in double figures in the victory led by 12 points each for Chase Sanders and Robert Davis. Sanders did it from behind the three-point line after he went 4-for-6 from the arc while Davis shot 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Shardarrion Allen and Kortrijk Miles both scored 11 points each while Justin Allison and Brice Martin both scored 10 points each. Allison led on the boards with seven rebounds and dished seven assists.

"This was a team win. We have a group that has bought into defending and is pulling for each other," said Woodruff. "We are down to the nine players in the program that are into something bigger than themselves. Winning solves a lot, but we learned a lot about our team in the four games we lost earlier in the year."

Scoring started slow for both teams with neither team reaching double digits until the 13:01 mark in the first half after free throws from Robert Davis gave the Tigers an 11-8 lead.

The Tigers built an 11-point lead on two separate occasions in the first half with the final coming at 5:58 off a jumper from Allison to go up 25-11. West Alabama went on to take a 33-26 lead to the half.

UWA's lead ballooned to 17 points the first time with 3:09 to go off a layup from CJ Melton before Davis hit a layup with 11 seconds left to bring to the 70-53 final.

West Alabama shot 51.2 percent (21-of-41) from the field, 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from three and 88.9 percent (24-of-27) from the free throw line.

Michael Motley led all scorers with 16 points for DSU and also secured eight rebounds and dished four assists. Maalik Cartwright scored 14 points and Airen Brooks poured in 12 points.

The Statesmen shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) in field goals, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the line.
The Tigers return to action to action tomorrow to wrap the regular season against Delta State,

"We have a huge game tomorrow at 2 p.m. and we need a huge effort again. The most important game on the schedule is tomorrow at 2 p.m.," said Woodruff.
