Tigers Complete Sweep of CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Four West Alabama pitchers combined to shut out Christian Brothers over 17 innings as the Tigers swept a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader from the Buccaneers Saturday at Tartt Field, extending UWA's winning streak to six games.

West Alabama won the first game, 11-0, after the league-mandated mercy rule ended the contest after eight innings. The Tigers took the nightcap, 8-0. The doubleheader sweep handed UWA a sweep of the three-game series and extended its home winning streak to eight games dating back to the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

With the pitching staff allowing just nine hits over the two games, Tiger bats combined to rap out 24 hits, including six for extra bases.

"The pitching staff did a great job today. We needed a day like today and everybody stepped up," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "The pitchers did everything we asked and more, and we scored more than one run in every inning we scored except one."

West Alabama pushed across at least two runs in seven of eight innings where a Tiger crossed the plate. The biggest frame of the day was a five-run eighth to end the first game.

Connor Brooks (1-1) went the distance in the opener for the win, striking out 10 while walking just one and allowing only four hits. Javian Stone (1-1) worked seven innings for the  victory in the nightcap, striking out 11 while allowing just one walk and five hits. Logan McDowell and Luke Lankford both worked scoreless innings in game two.

Brayden Lyman and Taylor Clemmons collected three hits apiece in the two games. Jacobey Hawthorne had two in the opener, including his first home run as a Tiger. Colden Peeples had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs. Antonio Jenkins, Trenton Lee and Houston Kitterman all drove in a couple of runs.

JD Goodspeed had two of CBU's five hits in game two. No other Buccaneer collected multiple hits in the doubleheader.

West Alabama will look to extend its winning streak at Tartt Field to nine games by closing out a seven-game homestand against Spring Hill Wednesday at 2 p.m.
