Livingston, Ala. - West Alabama won a Gulf South Conference game against Christian Brothers Friday night. Freshmen Breanna Fortenberry and Kelsie Gilliam led the Tigers to a 11-6 victory.
The Tigers improved to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in GSC play. Christian Brothers fall to 0-6 and 0-4.
"Breanna did an amazing job to settle down our staff," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "It was an amazing night for the freshman, with Gilliam behind the plate and hitting."
Breanna Fortenberry (1-0) picked up the win for the Tigers, allowing one run on two hits over 4.1 innings. Christian Brothers McKenna Rose (0-4) was charged with the loss.
Kelsie Gilliam led the team with two runs, two hits and two RBIs.
UWA took an early lead over the Bucs in the second inning, 5-4, after Gilliam's bunt. She singled, advanced to second on the throw, moving Morgan Windham to third. Windham and Gilliam both scored on a CBU fielding error.
West Alabama took the lead for good with five runs in the third inning. LP Trammell scored off of Haylie Best's single, advancing Nicole Buccieri to second and Kacy Noland to third.
Gilliam doubled driving in Best and Buccieri to keep the lead over CBU, 7-5.
The Tigers ended the inning when Kendall Johnson doubled on a 3-2 count and drove in two runs, Kylie Martin and Gilliam, bringing the score 9-5.
UWA closed out the game with Trammell's two-run homer for the final margin, 11-6.
The Tigers and Lady Bucs are scheduled to finish the three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is set at noon.
