Tigers Split DH with CBU, Win Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A tale of two types of games were on display for the University of West Alabama softball team as the Tigers dropped the opener of the day's doubleheader against the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers, 12-6, before rallying to collect a 3-2 victory in the second game and win the Gulf South Conference series Saturday at the UWA Softball Complex.
 
After the weekend, the Tigers are 6-6 on the season and 2-3 in league competition. CBU moved to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the GSC.
 
Breanna Fortenberry (2-0) put on a second quality outing for the weekend as she pitched a complete game with six hits and two earned runs in West Alabama's 3-2 win over Christian Brothers.
 
The Tigers jumped to an early lead in the contest scoring two runs in the first starting with a sacrifice fly from LP Trammell to allow Abby McKee to score. Kylie Martin followed with an RBI single up the middle as Cassie Matlock to crossed home and put UWA up 2-0.
 
CBU tied the game at 2-2 in the third with an RBI double from Memory Willingham and an RBI single from Bree Brady.
 
West Alabama regained the lead in fifth when Lexy House scored thanks to Martin getting caught between second and third base to reach the 3-2 final margin.
 
Both Martin and Peyton Coots finished the day with three hits while Martin and Kendall Johnson both collected two RBIs on the day.
 
The Lady Bucs jumped to an 2-0 in the first game as in the opening half inning Willingham singled in Ashley Dyer and later scored on a single from Elaina McGill.
 
The Tigers scratched across their first run of the day when House crossed home in the second. 
 
CBU added a run with a solo homer by Kendall Westbrooks in the third before the West Alabama comeback effort started. 
 
In the bottom of the third, Johnson collected her two RBIs off a double own the right field line that saw Kailey Hunt and Trammell score to tie the game 3-3. Peyton Coots followed with a double to left center to bring in Nicole Buccieri which gave the Tigers their first lead of the day at 4-3.
 
Christian Brothers scored a run in the fourth to re-tie the game at 4-4 with an RBI from Brady which drove in Gabby Schulttz. 
 
Trammell put UWA ahead once more in the bottom of the fourth with a double to drive in Kelsie Gilliam. Hope Mynard hit a single to left in the fifth to allow Chrissy Tubbs to score to put UWA 6-4 after five innings. 
 
However, in the seventh of the first game CBU scored eight runs capped by a grand slam from Willingham and used the big inning to seize a 12-6 win over UWA.
 
Macy Cumming (1-0) received the win for the Lady Bucs after going 4.2 innings with five hits and two earned runs allowed. Mackenzie Puckett pitched 2.1 innings to start the game and allowed six hits and four earned runs.
 
Haley Thorpe (0-2) took the loss for UWA with 0.2 innings of work with a hit and five runs allowed. Caleigh Wallace started the game and went 3.0 innings with three strikeouts while allowing four hits and three earned runs. Hannah Mynard went 3.0 innings and gave up three hits and two earned runs. Kamree Lay gave up a hit and a run in 0.1 innings of work.
 
West Alabama returns to action next weekend in GSC competition on the road in Cleveland, Mississippi against the Delta State Lady Statesmen with a single game on March 5 at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader starting at noon next Saturday.
