Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tigers Fall in Regular Season Finale to DSU, 61-42

CLEVELAND, Miss. – After a solid shooting performance last night, the University of West Alabama Women's basketball team could not get going tonight as the Tigers took a loss to the Delta State University Lady Statesmen, 61-42, Saturday afternoon in Walter Sillers Coliseum in Gulf South Conference action to wrap the regular season.

UWA dropped to 10-7 overall and 9-7 in GSC competition while DSU improved to 7-10 on the season and in the league.

"We obviously were feeling the effects of the energy we spent yesterday. Their post player was very dominant in a must win for Delta State," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "We couldn't find the basket today. Our defense held them to less points than yesterday. They just dominated the paint."

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett finished as the lone Tiger in double figures in the contest as the senior scored 12 points along with tying for the team lead with seven rebounds. Zoe Watts also finished with seven rebounds and was the second leading scorer with eight points. Jala Williams dished a team high four assists and scored five points.

The Tigers finished the contest 27.8 percent (15-of-54) from the floor, 6.7 percent (1-of-15) from three and 55 percent (11-of-20) at the free throw line.

Zyaire Ewing led Delta State with 27 points and 24 rebounds. She was the only player in double digits in either category for the Lady Statesmen.

As a unit, DSU finished 36.8 percent (21-of-57) shooting, 30 percent (3-of-10) from three and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free throw line.

The Lady Statesmen led 19-10 after the first quarter and used an 11-4 run in the second 10 minutes to take a 30-14 lead to the locker room. DSU outscored the Tigers 14-10 in the third before West Alabama won the fourth quarter 18-17 on the way to the 61-42 final score.

With this contest behind them, UWA can now focus on hosting the Lee University Lady Flames in the quarterfinals of the GSC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. This will be the first time West Alabama has hosted a women's basketball conference tournament contest on campus.

"Lee is a premier program. Marty is one of the best coaches in America at any level," said Cram. "We will have to be at the top of our game."

Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Livingston, Alabama. Links to live stats and live video on Flo Sports will be available on uwaathletics.com.
