Lee Advances in GSC Women’s Basketball Tourney

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Haley Schubert scored 33 points to lead Lee University to a 70-61 victory over West Alabama Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championship at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Lee improved to 14-6 and will play at top-seed Valdosta State (17-2) in the semi-finals Friday. West Alabama ends its season at 10-8.

"Anytime you lose to end your season it hurts, it stings," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "All the credit goes to Lee. (Coach) Marty (Rowe) does a great job with that program. They are fundamentally sound and disciplined.

"We just turned the ball over way too much and we didn't have consistent scoring across the board," Cram said. "The second quarter was our nemesis when we scored just seven points and dug ourselves too deep of a hole."

UWA turned the ball over 21 times leading to 24 Lee points in the game.

Lee jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes and led 23-14 at the end of the first quarter, making 9-of-13 field goal attempts in the first 10 minutes. The Flames forced 14 West Alabama turnovers in the first half, turning them into 17 points and a 36-21 advantage at the intermission. Schubert scored 20 of the Lady Flames 36 points in the first half.

UWA put together a 16-6 run over the first four minutes of the second half to cut the Lee lead to 42-37 with just over four minutes left in the period, but the Lady Flames led 51-39 at the end of three quarters.

Schubert, a first team All-GSC East selection, converted 14-of-24 from the field, also led Lee with seven rebounds and played 39 minutes. Julia Duncan was the only other Lee player in double figures with 15 points. Hannah Garrett dished out six assists.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led West Alabama with 23 points. Bria Dent added a double-double with 15 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. Both were named to the GSC All-West team. Jala Williams chipped in 10 points.

"Tazsa had some good moments tonight," Cram said. "Bria is just relentless and finds a way to get it done."

This was West Alabama's 24th appearance in the GSC tournament. The Tigers are 11-23 in tourney games. Lee improved to 8-4 in the league tournament, making its sixth appearance.
