HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of West Alabama softball team split both games of the opening day at the UAH Charger Chillout with a loss against Young Harris and a win over Union.
Game 1
The Tigers fall short to No. 6 Young Harris in the first game of the 2021 season. UWA took the Mountain Lions to extra innings ending the score 9-7.
The Tigers led early with six runs in the second inning while the Mountain Lions scored only two.
Young Harris made their comeback in the seventh inning adding three runs which brought the score to a tie 7-7. In the extra inning, the Mountain Lions pull ahead adding two runs making the score 9-7.
Mary Grace Sheffield led the Tigers with two runs. Grace Self had two hits with three runs batted in. Kacy Noland, Kylie Martin, and Kelsie Gilliam all added two hits with one run.
Noland pitched 4.1 innings with five strikeouts. She allowed six hits with five earned runs. Kamree Lay pitched 3.2 innings with one strikeout.
Game 2
The Tigers take down Union in extra innings with the final score being 7-6.
Union started off strong scoring two runs in the first inning then the Tigers led the rest of the game. Presley Witt's single to left at the bottom of the second led Sheffield to score. Sheffield had three runs and three hits along with one RBI.
Martin had two runs with two RBIs, allowing Kelsie Gill, Self, and Noland to score.
Kaeleigh Crutchfield pitched 2.1 innings with one strike out and allowed five hits and three runs. Lay pitched 5.2 innings with four strikeouts.
In the seventh inning the Lady Bulldogs made a comeback to tie the game 6-6. The Tigers held off Union in the eighth inning, and Sheffield made a triple to third base with the walk off hit.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Harding for game one of day two at the UAH Charger Chillout. UWA closes out the day with Lincoln at 1 p.m.
