UWA Women Come Up Short Against Nation’s Top Team

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Daryna Hukasian and Valeria Arevalo earned singles wins, but 16th-ranked West Alabama came up short against the top women's team in NCAA Division II Tuesday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of West Florida, losing to the University of Indianapolis, 5-2.
 
Indianapolis remained unbeaten at 9-0, snapping West Alabama's winning streak at four matches. The Tigers are now 5-2.
 
"The women battled well against the top team in the nation," West Alabama head coach Jeff Beaman said. "There were a ton of competitive matches across the board. This match shows our women that we can compete at the highest level."
 
Hukasian defeated Kristina Lagoda 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and Arevalo beat Sofia Sharonova 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
 
Hukasian and Hardija Vidnere earned a 6-0 win over Maria Solnyshkina and Sharonova at No. 3 doubles.
 
West Alabama faces another top 10 opponent Tuesday in a neutral site match against No. 7 Southwest Baptist in Montgomery, Alabama. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
