UWA Women Convincing in Upset of No. 7 SWB

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In its second match against a top seven opponent in three days, the 16th-ranked West Alabama women's tennis team rallied to defeat No. 7 Southwest Baptist, 5-2, in a Thursday late evening finish at the AUM Tennis Courts. 
 
After dropping a Tuesday match to top-ranked Indianapolis, the Tigers roared back to put the Bearcats away and win for the fifth time in its last six outings. UWA is now 6-2, while SBU dropped to 8-5.
 
"This is a great win for the women against a top-ranked opponent," West Alabama head coach Jeff Beaman said. "This team has bought in as a group, works hard in all aspects and supports each other. It is showing with their results."
 
Haina Franco and Thea Yang, along with Daryna Hukasian and Hardija Vidnere, controlled No. 2 and 3 doubles courts with 6-0 and 6-1 wins respectively to get the match off to a great start. With the doubles point in hand, the match on Court 1 did not finish.
 
Hukasian and Yang also picked up convincing victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Hukasian beat Elsa Pascual 6-0, 6-2 and Yang defeated Emma Davis 6-0, 6-1. Sarah Manseri was also dominant at No. 2 singles, defeating Constanca Crespo 6-1, 6-0.  Valeria Arevalo prevailed in a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Lola Concunegui at No. 5 singles.
 
The Tigers return to Gulf South Conference action but remain on the road with a Sunday match at Lee. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
