Tigers Fall in GSC Tournament Quarterfinals at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama Men's basketball team fought and clawed for another fourth quarter comeback, but the Tigers ran out of time as the Lee University Flames held on to grab a 66-63 win and advance to the next round of the Gulf South Conference Men's Championship Tournament Tuesday night in Paul Dana Walker Arena.

With the loss, the Tigers conclude the season with an 8-6 overall record. Lee moves to 14-4 on the year and will travel to face Alabama Huntsville Friday night.

"We have a tough group in that locker room. We have nine guys that bought into the coaching staff and each other and it was just getting fun to be a part of," said Head Coach Nick Woodruff. "I hate that this was a shortened season where these guys didn't have the opportunity to really see the full potential of this team. We were able to execute a couple things tonight that we would not have been able to a couple weeks ago."

West Alabama led 49-47 with six minutes left to go after Chase Sanders connected on a three-pointer to put the Tigers ahead. However, the Flames responded with an 15-4 run to go up 62-53 with 1:17 left.

The Tigers battled back and cut the lead to 62-61 with 11 seconds left after a pair of free throws from Sanders. The teams traded free throws from that point to reach the 66-63 final score.

"I am proud of the fight this team showed all year," said Woodruff. "I told them in the locker room that they are tough, they are resilient, they have fight and that is better than any compliment I can give them."

Kortrijk Miles led all scorers in the contest with 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor and a 4-for-5 effort at the free throw line. He added six rebounds, a steal and a block. Robert Davis was the leading rebounder with nine boards and added nine points. Justin Allison dished a team high four assists and made two steals.

As a team, West Alabama finished 46.3 percent (25-of-54), 9.1 percent (1-of-11) and 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the free throw line.

Lee edged UWA in the battle of the boards, 27-24. Both teams scored 36 points in the paint while the Flames committed 16 turnovers compared to 11 giveaways for the Tigers.

Three Lee players finished in double figures as Quay Kennedy led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds. Beyuan Hendricks posted 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Michael McGuirk scored 11 points and grabbed a team lead eight rebounds.

The Flames shot 52.2 percent (24-of-46) from field, 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from behind the arc and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) at the line.

Woodruff said, "This team had big shoes to fill from last season and they took the challenge head on."
