Tigers Close UWG Series With Victory

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Timely hitting and a late run-scoring surge propelled West Alabama to a 6-3 Gulf South Conference College baseball win over West Georgia Sunday at Cole Field.
 
West Alabama salvaged a game in the three-game series with the victory, improving its record to 9-10 overall and 7-9 in GSC play. West Georgia dipped to 9-10 overall, 9-9 in the league.
 
West Alabama opened the scoring with a run in the third inning when Trenton Lee walked, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Houston Kitterman and scored on a two-out single from Colden Peeples.
 
West Georgia answered with all three of its runs in the fourth inning on just one hit, an RBI single from John Michael McRae. Jackson Webb also drew a bases-loaded walk and Jason Fointno had a sacrifice fly. 
 
Peeples drove in his second run with his second single in the seventh, chasing Kitterman who had walked was bunted over to second by JD Roberts and then scored on Peeples base hit.
 
The Tigers took the lead for good with a three-run eighth inning. Taylor Clemmons scored on a wild pitch after reaching on one of three bases on balls in the game. Brayden Lyman doubled and scored on a pinch hit single from Josh Bower. Roberts then singled in JP Elkins, who pinch ran for Bower.
 
UWA added an insurance run in the ninth when Lyman singled in Clemmons, who had walked and moved to second on a passed ball.
 
Mason Hollander (2-0) picked up the pitching win in relief for UWA, allowing no runs in two hits with a pair of strikeouts over the final three innings. UWG reliever Peyton Berry (0-2) took the loss, allowing four hits and three earned runs in 1.2 innings.  
 
Lyman and Peeples accounted for four of West Alabama's seven hits with two apiece. Gavin Rogers also doubled for the Tigers.
 
McRae and Fointno each had two hits in an eight-hit West Georgia attack. Tiger pitching did not allow an extra base hit to the Wolves.
 
West Alabama travels to Mobile, Alabama on Wednesday to play Spring Hill at Hank Aaron Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. West Georgia is scheduled to host No. 8 Georgia College Wednesday at Cole Field.
